A friend and I were having a conversation a while back after watching Schindler’s List. I asked just out of curiosity which one he thought was worst: Black Slavery or The Holocaust. Was I shocked by his answer? No. I knew he would say Slavery. To me he only said that because he was African American. So last night I posed the same question to a Latino friend of mines and they said The Holocaust.
Don’t get me wrong. Both were morally wrong. Ma opinion will explained thru the two soon to be posted.
I asked a few ppl via email and this is what they had to say:
Ebony Said: How can you compare either horror? They were both the most tragic part of US and World history. Slave were hung and killed and beaten raped tortured for being black. Jews were persecuted for just being Jewish and gassed and put in acid and their skin used for lamps as decorations! How can you compare? Both are tragic in either way. How can you say “no what your people went through is not as bad as what my people went through”? It’s a slap in the face to both cultures.
Lucki Whispers Said: They were both horrible. The Nazis wanted to exterminate the Jews in order to have a perfect Aryan Race. In slavery Blacks were exploited in order to increase the riches of the plantation owners. Both the Nazi’s and the slave owners thought the groups they oppressed were less that human. Black families were destroyed and spread all over to control the slave population. Jewish families were disbursed in order to seize their wealth.
The first ghetto and where the term was coined from were in Venice. It consisted of a “housing Project “area surrounded by fences to house the Jews away from the general population.
In concentration camps Jews were experimented on (i.e. See Dr. Mengele angel of death) tortured and killed in gas furnaces. During slavery blacks were beaten, raped and sold as chattel.
Any situation where one group oppresses another or targets another which they consider inferior is horrible (apartheid, Japan Americans in interment camps during WWll, 911 terrorists, Skin Heads, Zebra Killers, etc.) Unfortunately the list of these situations is too long to mention. BTW the Zebra Killers were African American muslins targeting and killing white people to earn their “angel wings” within their group.
Sweetnectar: Good question, the affects of slavery still linger in the black community; starting with the breakdown of the black family. In the holocaust, Jews were experimented on while still alive and tortured to death. Born free then kidnapped and forced into slavery. Girl I do not know how to call it but I will definitely be interested in seeing your finished product. Let me know when it posts.
So in the coming weeks I will write 2 blogs; One about slavery and its effect on the black community and one on the Holocaust and its effects on the Jewish community. Then I will write a blog summing up my views and opinions. I hope you guys stay tuned.
