Holocaust VS Slavery (3 Part Series)

Posted on Updated on

Before you read this please have an open mind. I hope this doesn’t piss some people off…but it’s an open discussion.

A friend and I were having a conversation a while back after watching Schindler’s List. I asked just out of curiosity which one he thought was worst: Black Slavery or The Holocaust. Was I shocked by his answer? No. I knew he would say Slavery. To me he only said that because he was African American. So last night I posed the same question to a Latino friend of mines and they said The Holocaust.

Don’t get me wrong. Both were morally wrong. Ma opinion will explained thru the two soon to be posted.

I asked a few ppl via email and this is what they had to say:

Ebony Said: How can you compare either horror? They were both the most tragic part of US and World history. Slave were hung and killed and beaten raped tortured for being black. Jews were persecuted for just being Jewish and gassed and put in acid and their skin used for lamps as decorations! How can you compare? Both are tragic in either way. How can you say “no what your people went through is not as bad as what my people went through”? It’s a slap in the face to both cultures.

Lucki Whispers Said: They were both horrible. The Nazis wanted to exterminate the Jews in order to have a perfect Aryan Race. In slavery Blacks were exploited in order to increase the riches of the plantation owners. Both the Nazi’s and the slave owners thought the groups they oppressed were less that human. Black families were destroyed and spread all over to control the slave population. Jewish families were disbursed in order to seize their wealth.

The first ghetto and where the term was coined from were in Venice. It consisted of a “housing Project “area surrounded by fences to house the Jews away from the general population.

In concentration camps Jews were experimented on (i.e. See Dr. Mengele angel of death) tortured and killed in gas furnaces. During slavery blacks were beaten, raped and sold as chattel.

Any situation where one group oppresses another or targets another which they consider inferior is horrible (apartheid, Japan Americans in interment camps during WWll, 911 terrorists, Skin Heads, Zebra Killers, etc.) Unfortunately the list of these situations is too long to mention. BTW the Zebra Killers were African American muslins targeting and killing white people to earn their “angel wings” within their group.

Sweetnectar: Good question, the affects of slavery still linger in the black community; starting with the breakdown of the black family. In the holocaust, Jews were experimented on while still alive and tortured to death. Born free then kidnapped and forced into slavery. Girl I do not know how to call it but I will definitely be interested in seeing your finished product. Let me know when it posts.

So in the coming weeks I will write 2 blogs; One about slavery and its effect on the black community and one on the Holocaust and its effects on the Jewish community. Then I will write a blog summing up my views and opinions. I hope you guys stay tuned.

I think you are very brave to bring these two topics up. Both are very, very, very wrong, unjust, and should never, ever be repeated.

Yes they’re both wrong but sometimes with all these people acting so ignorant it needs to be brought up. I think the holocaust was worse but at the same time slavery wasn’t a great situation either. I think people should talk about it cause some people are blind and set in there ways they need to open there minds and speak what they feel. Great post they’re to many people scared to speak there minds.

After all of the discussions; Barbershop, School and with friends, no one has ever argued against one being worse than the other but more that “The Revolution Wasn’t Televised.” A movie, a documentary of the same caliber as Schindler’s List. I’m sure folk will come through with a few of the “Holloywood” tales and that’s cool but can we get one that is “CAFUBU” critically acclaimed for us by us?

I’m not afraid to say that slavery was worse, however only in retrospect. Other ethnic groups also have histories of discrimination, segregation, and racism directed toward them (albeit less severe than what Jews & Blacks received). Yet they and the Jews overcame such circumstances whereas Blacks have not.

Looking forward to the other two parts.

I have a similar discussion with my friends regarding Blacks and Canadian Natives, what makes some of us, let go and let God and others remain down and out?

We were auctioned off, beaten, tortured, burned alive, dragged, raped, and this happened for a very long time. No one came to save us. No reparations, but most of us picked up the pieces and asked God for help and strength.

I can’t say which history is worst, lives lost, families torn apart, it’s all horrible, inexcusable, and horrifying. I’m looking forward to this discussion.

@Mr. Tramuel… I have to say that Slavery was far worse too. Don’t misunderstand, the Holocaust was REALLY tragic, but I agree, Blacks folks have never truly overcome that horrific part of our past nor have we been given a fair opportunity. Additionally, you actually have some near about figures to the Holocaust, but for Slavery and the many, many years after it was abolished… literally ONLY GOD knows how many lives were truly lost during that time since lots of the logs listed us as freakin’ cattle! Blacks too were burned alive, and some men had their genitals removed WHILE THEY WERE ALIVE.

We are the most forgiving, even forgetful race about our important past, but still the MOST HATED RACE IN THE WORLD (oddly enough). I’d never really compare the two, but since this is the discussion, hands down SLAVERY.

A tidbit you guys might find interesting: I worked in payroll years ago, the company had it’s percentage of (the EEOC required) black folks and the salaries did seem to be based on race, not experience or credentials as Blacks were disproportionately paid compared to our counter parts. Even when you had a Black supervisor (for example) in a department compared to a Administrative Clerk. While we may not have visible shackles, we still have the financial ones… I seriously doubt that that has changed too. Ever wonder why when you first get a job and your employers will instruct you not to discuss salaries? Something to think about (maybe)…

There is one race that is to this day pushed out of countries without birth records and passports; Most Countries will not even grant this group citizenship even if they are born in the country. They are run out of town today having to leave everything without a moments notice. They are hated openly and no one cares. Would you even one if he was talking to you? Maybe not. We are Roma (Gypsy).

Where are the people demanding the end to our “Jim Crow” laws across Europe, where are the millions of dollars in foreign aid, or our affirmative actions programs? Our Struggle start 2000 Years ago and has gone unnoticed because Roma (Gypsy) “are not really people” and it is okay to treat Roma (Gypsy) like 2nd, 3rd or 4th class. Go to any Greek Orthodox Church and the will tell you we sold the nails to nail Jesus to the cross; We are hated for it. Hate of other groups rises and fall, but the hating of Roma (Gypsy) never fades.

I’ve read Five Chimneys by Olga Lengyel, and I must say both of them are pretty different in terms of ‘what’s worst’, since both of them were horrible. I think if you want to get to know more about it, that book is a MUST READ.

    Your post is quite interesting.

P.S. they wouldn’t only kill Jews, but Catholics, Christians…and other religions that believed in God were targeted.

I know this might be a little out of the whole discussion, but Merry Christmas! And thanks for reading the posts at my blog. Thanks for the comments too!! :D
Take care and enjoy the holidays!

I think there is absolutely no comparison between the holocaust and slavery. Just look at the pictures. The jews actually were enslaved and worked to death and if they did not die, they were gassed after working on little to no food or water. The slaves, while abused, yes, were taken care of because they were expensive investments and a live slave is much better than a dead one. Jews were just being exterminated and were worked to death while awaiting the gas chambers. Anyone who says that black slavery is even comparable has not seen even a fraction of the holocaust.

Both where horrid. I would say the Holocaust, but being Roma (Gypsy) and having my clan reduced to 8 people From 1000s I think I am standing to close to this issue to be objective.

Simple math here…..400 years of oppression with no recompensation versus 10 years and every western country in the world has paid and restored all that was stolen with interest.

Holocaust victims are honored. We are told to quit bitchin’. I love the Jews but they got a better deal. Only group that can almost complain is American Indians who America pretty much made extinct.

I hear this argument all the time especially from my Jewish friends. If the Holocaust continued at the rate it did the genocide would have easily overtaken slavery but I’m sorry I have to play the numbers game. http://users.erols.com/mwhite28/warstatv.htm

Read the death toll. In the Holocaust 6 million Jews were murdered, slavery might have anywhere from 5-15 times that many deaths. People are very misinformed because one event is more recent and the deaths occurred at a faster rate, while the other was over time. Africans win a game everyone wants to lose.

P.S. Don’t forget that Hitler despised any race that was considered impure, I think a blonde haired blue eyed Jew would still be considered better than an African American in his twisted mind. He killed blacks too, it’s just that the Jews were who he specifically targeted.

      sunnydelyte21 said:

Yes, I had to dig deep and look at that. He killed anyone that wasn’t “pure” if you were homosexual your were killed as well. Its two sad events that rocked the world.

slavery for sure not even plus Hitler went after every besides Jews but Hollywood makes you think it was only them. little known history fact blacks that where prisoners of war where often treated the same was as Jews, so you can add that to the list too. just think all of the Caribbean are a descendents of the slave trade. think about it. the Holocaust was horrible but its not even close. and ya native Indians win the prize for sure.

Slavery went on unabated 4 hundreds of years, & untold millions were tortured & killed for $. Today our former slave masters are HONORED, with their faces on our currency, landmarks, etc. Our schools & highways are named for these monsters, & we are urged to celebrate these ‘ great men’ on presidents day. A world war was fought for the liberation of the victims of the holocaust, but in the case of slavery, the world fought for the privilege to continue killing and enslaving my people.

Its so sad how people are attempting to downplay slavery and the holocaust to make one seem worse than the other. Slavery lasted for over four hundred years and Blacks are still prosecuted today regardless of their education and social status. They are all treated like animals who need to be wiped off the face of the earth. Millions of slaves were killed from them setting up traps to catch them in Africa(many of whom hung themselves when getting caught), and them being thrown off the slave ships in multiple numbers to make more room, and dying after being packed like sardines at the bottom of the ship for almost a month. When they reached America they were tortured, beaten, the women were repeatedly raped to breed more slaves, and if they dared to run away are work to slowly they were severely beaten, their feet amputated, and even killed. The only reason why so many Blacks still exist today is because many white slave owners raped the women producing more offspring, and after the Blacks gained their freedom they migrated to the north and continued to breed with other free Blacks. As far as the Holocaust, Hitler targeted everyone who was not Aryan(White with blond hair and blue eyes). Jews were targeted the most because of their religion and physical features, Blacks and Muslims were targeted as well. The Holocaust lasted 10 years and was responsible for the systematic extermination of most of the Jewish race in Germany during that time. Families had to hide and if they were caught they were taken to gas chambers, acid or gasoline was poured on their bodies and they were burned alive, and they were shot in thousands of numbers in open fields, just because they didn’t look like the supreme race. Educate yourselves on both of these tragic events and understand that slavery lasted longer so the death toll is significantly higher and while many Blacks are successful today they are still judged as a whole of being lazy, uneducated, and always wanting a handout. Many Holocaust survivors are highly respected today in society and many are prominent figures in the business realm and usually their families are very rich, showing they were able to overcome and prosper despite the extermination of their ancestors. P.S: If you are not Black or Jewish, you will never fully understand the pain from these events because it is not embedded in your family history and you are on the outside looking in. I’m a African American and my husband in Jewish, so I understand firsthand and have heard and seen pictures and stories from the horrid events that have taken place during both tragedies.

Do the math. Slaves went thru the same torture as the Jews but it lasted for 400 years instead of 10 years. Jews got reparated but slaves didn’t. Jews still know their family background while slaves can’t even trace their ancestors back to Africa because we all have Anglo Saxon first and last names sooooo…….

I am black and I cant help but have a great dislike (dont want to use the other word) for the non-blacks. I have read about and seen lots of pictures of some of the horrors……Oh Lord. Tears run down my face. To think some people turned themsleves to god and decided that some human being did not have a right to live and live freely simply because of the colour of their skin and eyas, colour and texture if their hair.

Coloured people may not be perfect… then again … who is anyway? i have meet with and related to white people both at home and in their own countries and have come to realise that all human being are the same – selfish! selfish!! selfish!!!. The only difference is that there are laws in place that prevents the average white man from misbehaving. if given the same circumstances as the black man would probably do the same if not worse- remember “Trading Places”?

I dont know which one was worse – Holocaust or slavetrade. One lastet for 400 years whilst another one lasted for 10 years. Go figure.

      Daniella said:

I agree with you Tangybabe, the only reason I didn’t come straight out and say Slavery was worse is because millions of people died and lost their whole blood line due to the Holocaust as well so I refuse to compare the two. With my description of both, one can see how horrifying and inhumane slavery was and how long it lasted in comparison to the Holocaust. Everyone has their own opinion and the saddest part is that many Blacks around the globe are still enslaved both physically and mentally due to the terror and hardships our ancestors have faced. ~Blessings~
